The Man Behind the Manifolds
Phil’s journey into high-performance engines began in his father’s shed at the age of 15, where he built a street sedan from the ground up. By the time he earned his learner’s licence, he was already behind the wheel of a heavily modified Datsun 1600—fitted with nitrous oxide and producing 175 hp at the rear wheels.
As a third-year apprentice mechanic, Phil built an SR20-powered race car that showcased not only his mechanical talent but his engineering mind. The car featured a 16-valve alloy block, quad 48mm throttle bodies, a ported and flow-tested head (tested using his own Superflow110 bench), and custom cams, achieving 170 hp at the wheels, naturally aspirated.
In 1998, his dedication and performance were on full display at the Club Car Nationals at Eastern Creek, where he recorded the fastest qualifying time in the under 2.0l class with a 1:49.89 lap. He went on to finish 2nd in the national championship for two consecutive years -1997 and 1998.
